The hard part of launching a new category isn't the product. It's the shelf. Oat milk had been around the world's specialty cafés for a decade before it arrived in mainstream New Zealand grocery — and the reason it hadn't arrived was distribution, not demand. Supermarket buyers don't take risks on categories they can't measure. Cafés did. All Good Oat Milk started where the demand actually was: behind the espresso machine, in flat white country, with baristas who'd been asking for it for years.

The brand carried over from the bananas — same illustrator's hand, same characterful face on the carton, same refusal to look like a wellness category brand. The Oat character looked you in the eye. The cyan ground signalled original; purple signalled barista. A two-SKU range, deliberately small, deliberately confident. No oat-milk-as-superfood theatre, no almond-milk-style anxiety. Just oat milk that worked in a coffee.

The trajectory looked like every successful category creation does in hindsight: café first, then a small set of progressive grocers, then volume retail, then a national line item — by which point the question was no longer whether New Zealand drank oat milk but which one. All Good's answer to that question was already on the shelf with its name spelled out in white drips.

Editorial — Simon's fill: the timing — when this launched, who pushed for it inside All Good, what the conversation with the first cafés was like. The illustrator credit. Confirmation that the launch year is what we think it is (currently TK in the meta block). The Matt Morrison February interview probably has the material.
